Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Within 24 hours of leaving the Congress party and joining the Trinamool Congress, MLA Byron Biswas was provided with security by the state police.
Biswas, who switched parties by joining hands with Trinamool General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, confirmed the arrangement of police protection on Tuesday morning. Since then, police security has been visible at Byron Biswas' residence in Shamsherganj, with eight armed constables and two assistant sub-inspectors deployed for his house's security. Additionally, three constables, a sub-inspector, and an assistant sub-inspector have been appointed as personal bodyguards for Byron Biswas.
The decision to provide security came after a phone conversation between Biswas and a state police officer regarding his safety after the political shift. Biswas expressed concerns about potential attacks, particularly if he were to return to the grounds in Murshibabad. Therefore, he requested police protection for himself and his family. Consequently, police personnel have been deployed at his residence since Tuesday morning, ensuring his safety.
Since his victory as an MLA from Sagardighi in the March elections, Byron Biswas had been appealing to the state police for security. At one point, he even approached the Calcutta High Court to seek protection. In response to his plea, Justice Rajasekhara Mantha of the Calcutta High Court ordered the state police to provide security. Biswas had previously criticized the state police for being negligent about his safety. However, after joining the Trinamool Congress on Monday, the state police promptly arranged for his accommodation and personal bodyguards, as per his request.
Meanwhile, AICC leader Jairam Ramesh took to Twitter to criticize the ruling party in Bengal regarding Byron Biswas' defection to the Trinamool Congress. Ramesh alleged that the Trinamool's actions were strengthening the hands of the BJP. He accused the Trinamool of sidelining Biswas, despite his historic victory as a Congress MLA in Sagardighi.
Ramesh labeled this move as a betrayal of the people of the assembly constituency, comparing it to similar instances in Goa, Meghalaya, Tripura, and other states that he claimed were solely aimed at serving the BJP's objectives rather than strengthening opposition unity.
